Karakoram Highway

Dari Lahore Fort, kita harus menempuh jarak 490 km pada jalur Islam abad - Chilas - Karakom Highway. Rutenya, selain melingkari gunung, juga menyusuri jalan desa dan kota. Pengemudi tidak bisa ngebut sebab banyak kawanan kambing dan kereta yang ditarik keledai berkeliaran di jalanan.
Namun, jangan lantas berpikir bosan sebab banyak pemandangan yang indah.
Melihat truk yang penuh lukisan dan hiasan bisa manjadi hiburan tersendiri. Orang Pakistan juga suka pernak-pernik seperti kembang buatan yang ada pada traktornya. Sementara kendaraan umum dipasangi sobekan kain hitam dengan tujuan supaya selamat di jalan.
Pemandangan gunung dengan puncaknya yang tertutup es serta cerita sang pemandu membuat perjalanan 14 jam tidak terlalu membosankan. Selama perjalanan itu, kita dapat melihat kereta gantung. Bentuknya sederhana, kotak begitu saja. Lalu di sana juga ada batu yang dilukisi oleh biksu yang pernah melintas di sana. Dari kejauhan terlihat jalan sutra kuno dengan pagoda tingkat tiga.
Esoknya menuju Hopar Glacier menggunakan jip. Selama di perjalanan, tidak ada polisi dan semua pengemudi di sini amat disiplin. Lalu sore hari kita menuju Baltit Fort yang merupakan bekas tempat tinggal Mirs of Hunza, yang menghuninya sampaitahun 1960. Benteng itu umurnya sudah 400-an tahun dan dibuat dari batu, lumpur kering, dan kayu.
